Royal Games + Fairy Tales = Europe’s Bread (no butter, please)
August 2016
Performative installation FOURNOS Gytheion, Greece Organisation: Fournos Platform (Maria Tzanakou | Vasiliki Sifostratoudaki) As the hero of Stefan Zweig’s “die Schachnovelle” resources into mentally fleeing from his enforced confinement by using chess-figurines sculpted out of bread crumbs - or the futile act by the little Thumbling / Hänsel and Gretel, of trying to mark their path with crumbs (a counterintuitive and bizarre choice of tool, to escape sacrifice in times of crisis and hunger) - which in the end results not in their safe return, but an involuntary emancipation - Rilène’s thoughts delve into similar uses of “Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from …” Photography by Irini Bachlitzanaki Video by Christos Vagiatas |
